Cremation on the rise
More and more, people across the country are choosing cremation over traditional burial services. And with the current economic climate, many more are expected to choose cremation as the more affordable option.
Over 30% of families in the United States choose cremation annually. Since 2001 when approximately 700,000 cremations were performed in the U.S. annually, the number of cremations has increased and is projected to reach an average of 1 million a year by 2010.
"People not only find it less expensive and more environmentally friendly," says CSNH President Buddy Phaneuf, "it's more convenient in terms of arrangments and for families that are spread out across the country. The ashes can travel with them, can be divided among loved ones and can be scattered in multiple resting places instead of at a fixed burial site."
